Get Ready to Roll This Spring By Cleaning Up the Garage

Get Ready to Roll This Spring By Cleaning Up the Garage

As spring blooms and temperatures warm up, it's time to open up the windows and go outside. This means getting into your garage and dusting off the cobwebs from your lawnmower, wiping down your outdoor table and chairs, and getting your car primed to take you where you want to go this summer season.

According to experts, outdoor equipment such as trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and even patio furniture need some time and attention to get them ready for use after sitting all winter. This is especially true for cars that have borne the brunt of snow, ice, slush and other winter-related weather.

Here are some tips for getting your machinery, vehicles and outdoor equipment ready for summer use and entertaining:

* Get your lawnmower out of the corner of the garage. Wipe down all surfaces with a dry cloth, oil moving parts to ensure they are well lubricated, and make sure the blade is sharp. Sharp blades are better for your lawn and put less stress on the engine. If you added a fuel stabilizer like STA-BIL Storage prior to putting it away for the winter, it should start up smoothly. Should you have some hard starts, try a revitalizer like Start Your Engines! to get it revved up quickly.

* Prime your automobile. With the cost of driving at a six-year low, you'll want to take that long-overdue road trip this summer, so ensuring that your auto is in tip-top shape is paramount. According to the AAA, driving costs are affected by how well your vehicle runs, and that includes the inside and outside of your car. Performing regular maintenance can ensure more efficient operation and help prevent costly repairs. One way to save money is by detailing the car yourself using products such as 303 Automotive Protectant to protect interior surfaces from cracking and fading. Originally engineered for aerospace and aviation applications, 303 Automotive Protectant safeguards against harmful UV rays that can cause discoloration. In addition, it keeps surfaces looking newer, leaves a dry matte finish so there's no oily feel, and helps repel dust. For the exterior, consider 303 Automotive Speed Detailer, which will instantly clean, protect and give your car a showroom shine. It's a great way to keep your car cleaner between washings. And at every fill-up to keep the engine running smoothly, use STA-BIL 360 Performance, a fuel treatment that protects your engine above and below the fuel line to keep your engine running cleaner, stronger and with greater performance.

* Assess your outdoor furniture. No matter what material your outdoor furniture is made of, start by wiping down the surfaces. Plastic furniture, if left uncovered all winter, may just need a little soap and water to remove any dirt. To protect your outdoor furniture's hard surfaces from harmful UV Rays, apply a layer of 303 Protectant. You'll also want to protect your fabrics from water and other debris, so try 303 Fabric Guard.

Summer Boating Tips for Safe Fun in The Sun

Summer Boating Tips for Safe Fun in The Sun

Summer weather is finally here, and with it comes more time spent on the water. For boaters in particular, warmer temperatures and sunny skies mean more opportunities to bring family and friends along for the ride.

Before inviting loved ones onto your boat, however, it's important to review some safety procedures to help ensure a relaxing experience for everyone.

Check out the tips below to ensure safe and enjoyable boating all summer long:

1) Watch the weather - Summer weather can turn nasty in an instant, and a boat can be a dangerous place to get caught in a storm. Before hitting the water, check the weather forecast and make note of any chance of precipitation or storms. If you see lightning while you're out on the water and cannot get to shore, crouch down in the middle of the boat or go below deck, if possible.

2) Boat maintenance - A well-maintained engine is key to enjoying your time on the water. So be sure to check your oil levels before heading out on the water, or invest in an engine that doesn't require oil changes, such as the E-TEC G2 by Evinrude. With an E-TEC, there's no need to remove any engine components to check oil levels before every use as with other engines, so you can get out on the water faster.

3) Life jacket required - Although warmer weather may make swimming irresistible, safety stillcomes first. It's important to always wear a life jacket while in the water, and to have access to one while in the boat. According to a 2014 study by the United States Coast Guard, 84 percent of victims who drowned during a boating accident were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. While they may seem like a hassle, life jackets really do save lives.

4) Don't drink and boat - An ice-cold beverage and boating can go hand-in-hand. However, just as with driving a car, it is illegal to operate a boat while intoxicated across the United States and Canada. In fact, being intoxicated on the water can be even more dangerous than being intoxicated on land. Unsteady footing, sun, wind, and even engine noise accelerates a drinker's impairment.

Keeping in mind a few simple safety tips can make all the difference for boat owners everywhere. So, before your next outing, make sure you, your boat and your passengers are all ready to go - and enjoy the ride!

Living It Up Outside By Bringing The Indoors, Out

Living It Up Outside By Bringing The Indoors, Out

For many, enjoying their outdoor space includes a poorly lit patio or deck with spartan, uncomfortable furniture, devoide of real style. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), outdoor living can be just as captivating, high-tech and chic as life inside your home.

Regardless of the season, it is becoming common to turn a patio, deck or outdoor space into an additional family room with modern amenities and beautiful furnishings. ALA-member lighting manufacturers are making this transition easier with expanded lines of decorative lighting rated for all-weather use.

Hinkley Lighting's CEO Rick Wiedemer, CLC, explains how the trend of accessorizing outdoor areas with traditionally indoor lighting products has gained momentum over the last several years. "It started with landscape lighting and then moved into sconces, wall sconces, and now pendants and chandeliers," Wiedemer says.

It's fairly commonplace to use sconces to highlight doorways and step lights to define spaces; today's homeowners are also hanging elaborate chandeliers and colorful pendants over outside tables. Spotlights can be seen above grills and downlights under covered patios.

With a little creativity and imagination, just about anything goes. And the demand is increasing for those fixtures to mimic the styles and attention to detail traditionally found indoors.

"People want to extend their indoor living space outside, and still have the same quality of finishes outside as inside," says Rick Seidman, president and CEO of Quoizel, Inc. "They're putting rugs, televisions and furniture outside, so we almost have to treat [outside] decorative lighting as if it's interior."

Just because the newest outdoor lighting fixtures are beautiful, don't assume they lack the engineering to withstand harsh temperatures and extreme weather. High-quality outdoor fixtures are designed for reliability and endurance.

"One of the things consumers are concerned about when shopping for lighting is durability," says Seidman. "It really has to be able to withstand the elements. With new technology, fixture finishes are actually built into the material so that it weathers beautifully."

Wiedemer concurs."You want to have something that's meant to be in the weather. Normally a rustic finish fixture will weather better," he says. "The principal thing these are engineered for is to be rained upon. Rain will not collect inside the fixture, it will drain out…. A typical interior fixture is not made that way."

The latest all-weather lighting is at your local ALA-member showroom.

6 Myths About Pet Allergies

6 Myths About Pet Allergies

By gaining a better understanding of the allergies caused by pets, you may be able to find a healthier coexistence with your furry friend.
According to The Humane Society, 62 percent of American households have at least one pet. Yet, an estimated 31 million Americans are allergic to animals, including up to 30 percent of those who have asthma. Here's what you should know about pet allergies:

Myth 1: It's only pet hair that causes allergies to flare up.

Not true. Pet hair is a nuisance and causes allergies, as it contains saliva or other pet proteins. Allergic reactions to pets are actually caused by pet proteins contained in pet dander, such as microscopic skin flakes, saliva and urine. Overactive immune systems in those with allergies attack these otherwise harmless substances.

Myth 2: Continuous exposure to animals will eventually desensitize you to them.

Not only is this not true, but in some cases the opposite is true. If you have a confirmed allergy to animals, it usually will not get better through increasing exposure. In fact, it may get worse.

Myth 3: With the right pet breed, allergy problems go away.

Not true. All cat or dog breeds produce dander. However, some breeds are believed to be better for allergy sufferers than other breeds. Typically the best breeds are those that shed the least fur and/or are the most frequently bathed. Also, smaller dogs produce less saliva than do bigger dogs.

Myth 4: Small animals are not a problem for allergies.

Wrong. Hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and other warm-blooded mammals can also trigger asthma and allergies in people with allergies to animal dander, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Myth 5: Outside the home, you shouldn't have pet allergies.

Not necessarily. Because of their microscopic size and jagged shape, pet allergens easily stick to clothing and other fabrics and are carried to other locations. Animal dander -- in sufficient levels to cause allergies -- can be found in many public places such as the workplace, classrooms and hospitals, according to the American Lung Association.

Myth 6: An air purifier will help with pet allergies.

It depends on the air purifier. Only a high-performance air purifier can help. Some allergy sufferers report that small, low-quality air cleaners make little or no difference at all. However, many allergy sufferers report that their IQAir air purifier, in combination with improved cleaning methods, has reduced or completely eliminated their allergic reactions to pets in their homes.

Thought You Knew Canned Fish? You Don't Know Mackerel

Thought You Knew Canned Fish? You Don't Know Mackerel

Packed in a can like ... mackerel? While tuna and salmon reign as the USA's favorite canned seafoods and sardines have long been known to be convenient and the best health choice, a new fish has been swimming upstream and making a name for itself among seafood lovers.
King Oscar, the leading seafood brand known for its premium canned sardines, has seen an explosion in demand for its premium canned mackerel fillets. Thanks to superior North Atlantic mackerel fished in King Oscar's traditional fisheries between Norway and the Faroe Islands, King Oscar is bringing a whole new experience to the canned seafood aisle of your local grocer.
Mackerel offers the same firm texture of tuna, with a mild taste and a powerful punch of nutrition.
King Oscar now features a full lineup of four different mackerel fillet recipes, including skinless and boneless fillets in olive oil, Mediterranean-style fillets with jalapeno peppers, and even mackerel with olive oil and lemon.
The fillets are hand-packed and offer a wonderfully mild alternative to canned tuna. Whether they're added to a salad, a favorite pasta, or even spread on a simple bruschetta, these are a versatile addition to any meal.
For seafood lovers who are environmentally-conscious, the new King Oscar line-up is a welcome departure from other seafood sources that are not as environmentally-friendly. Underscoring this idea is a survey that notes seventy-nine percent of consumers who eat seafood say that sustainable sourcing is an important motivator when making decisions at the checkout line.

King Oscar was recently awarded Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody certification for its use of sustainable seafood that is traceable to the source. MSC is one of the most scientifically respected and consumer-recognized fishery and supply chain certification programs in the world. Thanks to its ecologically sound practices from fisheries to canneries, all King Oscar Mackerel Fillet products now carry the MSC blue fish label and are also kosher certified, non-GMO, gluten free and packed in recyclable, BPA-NI aluminum cans.
"I know consumers are going to love our mackerel," says John Engle, president of King Oscar USA. "It is a fresh new take on convenient, sustainable and tasty protein. We work especially hard to ensure that our legacy is one of respect and care for the world's oceans, while bringing new innovations to the American diet."
King Oscar's new mackerel lineup is available in stores and online. Look for the KING OSCAR logo with the blue MSC icon so you know you're buying the best.

50 Years Later, This Medicine is Still Protecting Moms and Newborns

50 Years Later, This Medicine is Still Protecting Moms and Newborns

Every pregnant woman in the world should know the name Marianne Cummins.
Fifty years ago, in May 1968, the then-29-year-old Teaneck, New Jersey, homemaker was expecting her third child when she became the first person to receive an injection of a new medicine called RhoGAM, developed to help prevent a condition that in the U.S. alone was leading to the deaths of about 10,000 newborns annually and brain damage in others.

"That one injection had a tremendous impact on my family," Cummins recently recalled.
Cummins, you see, has Rh-negative blood, a trait shared by 15 percent of the U.S. population.
But the fetus inside her was Rh-positive - as were her two children at home.
To understand how terrifying that incompatibility was in those pre-RhoGAM days, a bit of Biology 101 is in order. During any pregnancy, it's normal for some of the baby's blood to enter the mother's blood stream, usually at delivery. However, when Rh-positive fetal red blood cells cross into an Rh-negative mother's circulation, her body reacts like it's fighting off an invading virus, producing antibodies that can attack the baby's blood cells. This immune system response is called "Rh sensitization."
The first child is typically unaffected since manufacturing those antibodies takes time. However, any Rh-positive baby after that - and, remember, this was Cummins' third pregnancy -represents a dangerous gamble; Rh sensitization sometimes leads to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), a deadly condition.
RhoGAM, as it does to this day, prevented that sensitization from happening.
"I still marvel at RhoGAM's impact," John Gorman, MD, a co-creator of the medicine and former director of the blood bank at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, has said.
In fact, with approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in hand, the drug's use became standard medical practice for every pregnant Rh-negative woman here and in Europe and Canada, resulting in HDFN's virtual eradication there. But in many poorer countries lacking the same protocols? Even now, the situation remains what many call so "dire" that an estimated 14 percent of affected fetuses are stillborn and a full 50 percent of live births end in death or brain injury, according to a scientific paper published in 2010 by leading medical experts.
That's why in February 2018, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the FDA's approval, Kedrion Biopharma, which makes RhoGAM, and Columbia University Irving Medical Center, which developed it, hosted a panel discussion to map strategies for getting the medicine to the rest of the world.
"The view ahead should be bright for all women, their partners, and their families around the globe," declared Paolo Marcucci, chief executive officer at Kedrion Biopharma.
In addition, a series of upcoming events throughout the year will encourage Rh-negative women to donate blood plasma to be used in the ongoing manufacture of RhoGAM by Kedrion Biopharma.

Important Safety Information

RhoGAM should NOT be used if you are Rh-positive.
Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, including:
* If you have known severe allergic reactions or a severe response to human immune globulin.
* If you have experienced a serious reaction to other medicines that contain immune globulin.
* If you have an immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency. RhoGAM contain a small quantity of IgA and there is a potential risk of an allergic reaction in IgA-deficient individuals. Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure.
* Your recent history of vaccinations. Certain types of vaccines (ones containing a live virus) may not work as well for you if you are also receiving immune globulin products, like RhoGAM. The antibodies in RhoGAM may prevent the vaccine from working. Before you get a vaccine, tell your healthcare provider that you have received RhoGAM.
RhoGAM is made from human blood and therefore, carries a risk of transmitting infectious agents, such as viruses, the agent of the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), or unknown infectious agents. You should consult with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Reactions to RhoGAM that affect the entire body are extremely rare. However allergic responses to RhoGAM may occur. You should be observed for at least 20 minutes after administration for early signs of an allergic reaction. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include itchy rash (hives), tightness of the chest, wheezing, low blood pressure and anaphylaxis (which may also include throat or tongue swelling, shortness of breath, vomiting, hives and/or lightheadedness).
The most common side effects of RhoGAM are swelling, hardening, redness, and mild pain at the site of the injection. A small number of patients have noted a slight fever.
Your healthcare provider should provide you with a completed Patient Identification Card for you to retain and present to other healthcare providers.

Malt Makes a Comeback, Packing Powerful Nutritional Benefits

Malt Makes a Comeback, Packing Powerful Nutritional Benefits

While the origin of malt can be traced back to early Egyptians, the full value of this healthy, "forgotten ingredient" has been overlooked and underappreciated.
As Americans strive to satisfy their appetite for the next nutritional trend, malt is a resounding reminder that sometimes our ancestors truly do know best.
Malt is nostalgically remembered as a cornerstone of American culture, conjuring fond memories of vintage "malt shops" or a delicious glass of Ovaltine™ malted milk. But, what exactly is malt?
Malt is basically sprouted barley. By sprouting the barley, the grain's enzymes are unlocked with only water and heat in an ancient, natural process that releases the whole grain's nutritional power. Malt can be further processed to produce liquid or powder sweeteners called malt extracts that are used in beverages (beer, malted shakes, energy drinks), baked goods (cakes, pretzels, breads), cereals and snacks (protein bars, yogurts, confections), and other foods.

Malt Extract's Natural Health Benefits

* Athletic Recovery: Today, malt extract is drawing renewed attention as a naturally-functional ingredient that packs a host of powerful intrinsic health benefits - one reason that, among other uses, athletes are increasingly relying on malt extract-based beverages to replenish and recover.
* Boosts Happiness: Malt extract might actually make you happy! Malt extract contains Hordenine, a plant-based, naturally occurring compound that has been found in scientific studies to lift your spirits. Hordenine was shown to activate the dopamine D2 receptor, the brain's reward center, which causes this "feel-good" effect. It has also been reported to sharpen mental focus and heighten energy levels.
* Sweetener with Substance: Malt extract is not an empty sugar. When used as a sweetener, malt extract is a functional ingredient that serves as a source of antioxidants, essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals, and is made with whole grains. As an added benefit, malt extract has a significantly lower glycemic index than table sugar.
* Supports Digestive Health: Malt extract can be good for your gut. Malt extract is a rich source of soluble fiber, which helps improve digestion by optimizing good bacteria and minimizing bad bacteria. Studies show malt extract facilitates the growth of probiotic cultures that can enhance digestive health by supporting the good bacteria that lines the gut. This can help prevent illness and promote essential nutrient absorption, enhancing overall health.

* Promotes Heart Health: Malt extract is shown to reduce the risk of heart problems by helping to lower cholesterol. A heart-healthy mix, malt contains fiber, potassium, folate, and vitamin B6, which together lower cholesterol and decrease the risk of cardiac disease. Its dietary fiber helps reduce insulin activity and increases cholesterol absorption from the gut and encourages cholesterol breakdown. Studies indicate this promotes lower cholesterol by reducing plaque formation.
* Antioxidants Galore: Malt extract packs more than 5 times the antioxidant power of fresh broccoli and nearly 50 percent more than blueberries. It is an abundant source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, dietary silicon (supports bone health), B complex vitamins and micro minerals. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants has been shown to strengthen heart health, support anti-aging, and lower risk of infection and some forms of cancer.
"Malt extract is emerging as a naturally-functional ingredient that consumers should look for in many of their favorite foods and beverages," says Amy Targan, president, Malt Products Corporation.
"Today's health-conscious consumer demands a diet enriched with ingredients that provide optimal flavor and nutritional function to complement their lifestyle."
Companies such as Malt Products Corporation provide all natural, non-GMO certified malt extracts to a multitude of leading bakery, confectionary, beverage, snack food, and cereal manufacturers nationwide.

No Arms, No Legs, No Worries

No Arms, No Legs, No Worries

One might not think that someone with no arms and no legs could swim, much less scuba dive, but with the help of one non-profit organization based in the Chicagoland area, children, veterans and people of all abilities around the world can benefit from zero gravity and scuba therapy.
The Downers Grove-based Diveheart Foundation has been serving individuals with everything from spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries to those on the autism spectrum and with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Since 2001, this 501 C3, volunteer-driven charity has done everything from helping to facilitate cutting-edge scuba therapy research with university medical centers around the country to launching a leading international adaptive scuba training program for scuba instructors, dive buddies and adaptive divers (Diveheart refers to people with disabilities as adaptive divers, not handicapped or disabled divers).
"It's not about scuba diving," according to Tinamarie Hernandez, Diveheart Executive Director.

"Diveheart's ultimate goal is to take the unrealized human potential that exists with individuals with disabilities and create a paradigm shift in their lives," she says.
"We take Chris in the wheelchair and help him or her become Chris the scuba diver. Now Chris is no longer defined by his or her disability," she adds.
"Diveheart then helps direct them to activities like coral reef restoration, marine biology and oceanography, giving them focus, purpose and helping them to feel valued while they are learning to become good stewards of the environment."
Diveheart's free scuba experience programs reach from coast to coast in the U.S. and are replicated by Diveheart teams as far away as Malaysia.
Researchers from around the country have found that the benefits of scuba therapy and zero gravity underwater range from relief of symptoms caused by post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain to increased focus and a sense of well-being in those with developmental disabilities.
Researchers have also discovered that there are big benefits in going deep because the body produces an extra output of serotonin once divers reach 66 feet underwater. However, those with developmental and physical disabilities can benefit from the very first pool session.
Diveheart's ultimate goal is to secure funding to build a deep warm-water research and training facility so that the benefits of scuba therapy can be replicated in a safe, confined, warm-water environment.

If you're feeling stressed and anxious, research says: feed the birds

If you're feeling stressed and anxious, research says: feed the birds

In today's constant contact, cell-phone celebrated, digital world, most people can go days or even weeks without spending any time in natural sunlight. Instead, we eat breakfast inside, or on the go, only to race to an office, filled with artificial light and plastic plants, for 8 to 10 hours a day. It's no wonder why Americans' mental health is suffering.
Compare that hectic routine to those memorable moments when you're able to sit quietly, let the sunshine warm your face, hear the birds, and allow nature to envelope you. While everyone longs for less stress, actually relaxing can be dauntingly stressful!
However, a new study out of the United Kingdom sheds light on one way people can de-stress: bird watching. The study finds that people who watch birds from their home have lower depression, anxiety, and stress compared to those that live in less leafy areas that have fewer birds. People "felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their garden," researchers say. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard, they add.

Specifically, the number of birds people might see was directly associated with better mental health. "This study starts to unpick the role that some key components of nature play for our mental well-being. Birds around the home and nature in general, show great promise in preventive health care, making cities healthier, happier places to live.," says lead researcher Dr. Daniel Cox from the University of Exeter.
Dr. Tina Phillips, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, agrees. "Overwhelmingly, studies show that people feed birds because it makes them feel more relaxed, that it's something they're interested in and ultimately something that makes them feel good."
If you want to disconnect from the digital world and relieve some daily stress and anxiety, getting outside, bird watching could be the key to increasing your mindful, mental health. Since studies reveal the more birds you see, the less likely you are to be stressed and anxious, it's important to attract as many birds as possible.
The first step to attracting birds is to use an all-purpose tube feeder, which is the number one feeder choice, allowing birds to feed from multiple ports. Cole's Wild Bird Products, Co. offers the Terrific Tube feeder, it's made to last with state-of-the-art materials that prevent warping and discoloration and it features a "Quick Clean" removable base, so cleaning is super simple. Natural grip perch covers mimic the feel of a real branch, which encourages longer feeding times.
Once you have the right feeder, you'll need reliable seed that will bring birds to your backyard to deliver that dose of stress relief we all desire. According to Elaine Cole, President and owner of Cole's, the quality of birdseed will determine how many feathered friends will flock to your backyard.
Unlike other birdseed mixes, which typically contain cheap filler seed like milo and wheat, Cole's selects only the top 1 to 2 percent of the highest quality seeds birds like to eat. Plus, Cole's doesn't add pesticides or chemicals, preferring instead to keep the seed as close to its natural state as possible.
"If you use inferior seed, you're not going to like the results. Our seed is specifically formulated to attract the greatest number, variety, and species of birds. Birds are picky and birdseed matters. If you use cheap feed, they won't hesitate look for something else they prefer. Birds are like people, give them what they like to eat and they'll come back and bring their friends." Cole said.
Since we've learned that the more birds we attract, the more stress-free we'll be, it makes good sense to use the best bird feed you can buy. Cole's Special Feeder, attracts the greatest number of wild birds than any other mix out there. Add Cole's Blue Ribbon blend, which attracts the greatest variety of wild birds to the mix, and you've got the perfect prescription to help calm your anxiety and stress.
At the heart of it, everyone wants less stress and anxiety. Once you start watching birds in action, they'll engage your attention in a way that keeps you in the moment, a state that provides mental relief. Admiring their beauty, listening to their sweet song and enjoying their antics will calm your overactive mind and bring joy and renewal.

Ultimate Life Hack for Managing Your Money after the Wedding Day

Ultimate Life Hack for Managing Your Money after the Wedding Day

While your love may know no bounds for your spouse, things can get a little more tricky when talking about finances.
Financial issues are one of the most cited causes of conflicts in a marriage, and financial problems, including debt and disagreement about money management, are among the top issues in divorce as well.
Merging your life, including your financial life, with someone else's can be challenging, but setting up a solid financial plan early in marriage can help preserve harmony and nip money conflicts in the bud. Data from Ameriprise Financial show that at least one-third of couples disagree about money at least once a month on topics including savings and discretionary spending.

Fortunately, today's technology offers new options to help couples navigate shared and individual finances. More American couples now maintain separate bank accounts instead of, or in addition to, joint accounts, and the latest banking apps offer flexibility, security, and ease of use. MovoCash is one example of a digital payment card platform that offers consumers with a variety of financial life hacks as alternatives to traditional banking services. Anyone in the U.S. can open an FDIC-insured MOVO card account that is easy to use and doesn't require gold-plated credit.
MOVO's easy design offers a simple financial strategy for couples: each partner can open a separate account for immediate spending needs and personal discretionary purchases, and the couple also can maintain a joint account for major expenses such as savings, bills, and home expenses. Purchases and payments can be made quickly and directly from a phone.
In addition, funds can be transferred instantly between MOVO accounts, and the system allows for direct deposits to manage incoming paychecks and outgoing payments. The MOVO card can be used anywhere Visa is accepted, so that cuts down on the use of credit cards and the potential debt of credit-card bills. The app helps users track transactions and monitor balances, making it easier to avoid overspending and stick to financial goals while leaving room for each partner's pleasure purchases.

Android or iOS: What makes a better business platform?

Android or iOS: What makes a better business platform?

Both the platforms have such distinct business advantages that the final call is often a hard row to hoe.

Here are a few subtleties you got to account for ahead of making the call:

Costs: Application costs are a big development factor and between the two, Android wins hands down. Vintage Apple is being up-market, which comes off in iPhone apps costing that little bit extra. Android on the other hand is a mass-market proposition open to different manufacturers and developers. Obviously, this drives down the costs and makes Android app development better suited for limited budgets.

Monetization Models: Over the years, iOS has aggregated a highly dedicated user of loyalists not averse to spending on iPhone apps. Google Play on the other hand has tons of free Android apps alternatives challenging its claim to being a strong marketplace for paid apps. Launching an iPhone app is a better leverage especially when it is a premium solution. Android makes better prospects for targeting the mass market.

End-user experience: For a long time, Android apps have been dealing with issues of fragmentation. Though regular OS upgrades along the way seem to be making up well, the open-source nature of the platform is a challenge in itself.  Manufacturers can have their way with UIs and fundamental device specs to appeal to wider consumer demographics. However, this adds up to inconsistency across devices and divided user experiences.

On the other side of the equation, an iPhone app guarantees consistency across the platform. There are no device iterations and such things with Apple which helps in establishing a standard experience. Moreover, with iTunes, Apple has a centralized control of the entire user experience ranging from the PC to the iPhone and the iPad. Definitely, this appeals to the user sensibility more strongly.

Development Cycle: The longer the development pipeline, the more you cough up, and this is a major issue with iPhone app development. Apple is known for its cast-iron approach leading to unrealistic approval times. Though the process is designed to safeguard its own mobile appeconomy, Apple’s unyielding review system can disrupt progress especially since there’s not much officially available to guide developers. An Android app doesn’t need to go through such trials and tribulations, thanks to Google’s development-friendly framework.

With such vastly divided parameters, a straight winner is unlikely. However, you must decide based on value which calls various factors other than the above. A good app developer can direct you towards the right choice, and this is what brings SDI into reckoning.

5 Features for Literacy Games on Android Platform

5 Features for Literacy Games on Android Platform

Increasingly parents and schools are relying on technology for children’s education and mobile application development companies are delivering rich experiences through their products in this area. Popular digital education website like Khan’s Academy and the mobile application Byju’s that was recently taken over by Facebook are a strong case in point in favour of the many merits of education apps and the reach they have. The engaging nature of the application, the paces being set to the student’s learning speed and the revisit and recall factor all add to its many benefits in gaining popularity amongst children.

Mobile app development companies work in tandem with education institutions to create applications that use the experiential learning format to engage children as individuals and groups through activities. Android is the leading mobile operating system with over 1 billion applications in its app market, the Google Play Store. It has greater reach since the open source platform is available on smartphones, wearable device and tablets in multiple price ranges. This gives its market place greater reach among target audience for the applications worldwide.
We take a look at 5 features for literacy games on Android platform that can aid in creating a rich learning experience for kids.

1. Animation for engagement
Animated figures with lots of colours and multimedia engage students of all age group. With older students, the trend leans towards high quality original images and animating facts and figures so that they leap or zoom into prominence. This aids recalling the facts and also helps in understanding concepts. Background noises, music and even recorded voice clips augment the efficacy of the visual tools.

2. Games and Interaction
Instead of a question bank or tests with multiple choice questions, if the tests are presented as games, where user can challenge others or score themselves, like in quizzes, with prizes and levels they can cross, the entire learning session becomes interesting and engaging. The advantage of an application is students can work at their own pace and distract themselves by exploring various aspects of the application. If a game is added to the application it enables students to engage in the application and not just view it passively.

3. Use voice recordings, camera and other device feature for personalizing the experience
The mobile device features such as mike, camera, flash etc. can be used to extend the application features and creating a personalized user experience. What is 3g Technology?

3G Technology

3G is the third era of remote advances. It accompanies upgrades over past remote innovations, similar to rapid transmission, propelled sight and sound access, and worldwide wandering.

3G is for the most part utilized with cell phones and handsets as a way to interface the telephone to the web or other IP organizes so as to make voice and video calls, to download and transfer information, and to surf the Web.

The 3G standard, despite the fact that regardless it fills in as a fallback for some cell suppliers, has to a great extent been supplanted by the 4G standard, which itself is being obscured by 5G administrations.

3G pursues an example of G's that the ITU began in the mid 1990s. The example is really a remote activity called the International Mobile Communications 2000. 3G, in this manner, comes soon after 2G and 2.5G, the second-age advancements.

2G innovations incorporate, among others, the Global System for Mobile. 2.5G brought models that are halfway somewhere in the range of 2G and 3G, including the General Packet Radio Service, Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, and others.

How Is 3G Better?

3G offers a few improvements over 2.5G and past systems:

A few times higher information speed

Upgraded sound and video gushing

Videoconferencing support

Web and WAP perusing at higher rates

IPTV (TV through the web) support

Specialized Specifications

The exchange rate for 3G systems is somewhere in the range of 128 and 144 kilobits for every second for gadgets that are moving quick, and 384 kbps for moderate ones — like strolling people on foot. For fixed remote LANs, the speed goes past 2 Mbps.

3G is a lot of innovations and benchmarks that incorporate W-CDMA, WLAN, and cell radio, among others.

Necessities for Use

Not at all like with Wi-Fi, which you can get for nothing in hotspots, you should be bought in to a specialist organization to get 3G arrange availability. This sort of administration is frequently called an information plan or system plan.

Your gadget is associated with the 3G organize through its SIM card (on account of a cell phone) or its 3G information card (which can be of various kinds, as USB, PCMCIA, and so forth.), the two of which are generally given or sold by the specialist organization.

These cards are the way the gadget interfaces with the web when it's inside scope of a 3G organize. Truth be told, the gadget is in reverse perfect with more established innovations, which is the reason a 3G good telephone can get 2G administration if it's accessible when 3G administration isn't.

The Future of 3G

The 3G fever of the mid 2010s has subsided; most gadgets presently bolster the 4G standard, utilizing 3G as a fallback if 4G associations aren't accessible. In certain pieces of the world, especially in country territories, 3G remains a spine administration.

3G alludes to the third era of versatile communication (that is, cell) innovation. The third era, as the name proposes, pursues two prior ages.

The original (1G) started in the mid 80's with business organization of Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) cell systems. Early AMPS systems utilized Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (FDMA) to convey simple voice over diverts in the 800 MHz recurrence band.

The second era (2G) developed in the 90's when portable administrators conveyed two contending computerized voice principles. In North America, a few administrators received IS-95, which utilized Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to multiplex up to 64 calls for each direct in the 800 MHz band. Over the world, numerous administrators received the Global System for Mobile correspondence (GSM) standard, which utilized Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) to multiplex up to 8 calls for every divert in the 900 and 1800 MHz groups.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) characterized the third era (3G) of portable communication benchmarks IMT-2000 to encourage development, increment data transmission, and bolster increasingly various applications. For instance, GSM could convey voice, yet in addition circuit-exchanged information at rates up to 14.4 Kbps. In any case, to help portable mixed media applications, 3G needed to convey bundle exchanged information with better unearthly effectiveness, at far more prominent paces.

Be that as it may, to get from 2G to 3G, portable administrators had make "transformative" moves up to existing systems while all the while arranging their "progressive" new versatile broadband systems. This lead to the foundation of two particular 3G families: 3GPP and 3GPP2.

The third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) was framed in 1998 to cultivate sending of 3G systems that slid from GSM. 3GPP innovations advanced as pursues.

• General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) offered accelerates to 114 Kbps.

• Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) came to up to 384 Kbps.

• UMTS Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) offered downlink accelerates to 1.92 Mbps.

• High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) helped the downlink to 14Mbps.

• LTE Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) is going for 100 Mbps.

GPRS arrangements started in 2000, trailed by EDGE in 2003. While these advances are characterized by IMT-2000, they are at times called "2.5G" on the grounds that they didn't offer multi-megabit information rates. EDGE has now been superceded by HSDPA (and its uplink accomplice HSUPA). As indicated by the 3GPP, there were 166 HSDPA arranges in 75 nations toward the finish of 2007. The subsequent stage for GSM administrators: LTE E-UTRA, in light of details finished in late 2008.

A second association, the third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) - was framed to support North American and Asian administrators utilizing CDMA2000 change to 3G. 3GPP2 innovations advanced as pursues.

• One Times Radio Transmission Technology (1xRTT) offered accelerates to 144 Kbps.

• Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) expanded downlink accelerates to 2.4 Mbps.

• EV-DO Rev. A helped downlink crest speed to 3.1 Mbps and decreased idleness.

• EV-DO Rev. B can utilize 2 to 15 channels, with each downlink topping at 4.9 Mbps.

• Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) was slated to achieve 288 Mbps on the downlink.

1xRTT wound up accessible in 2002, trailed by business EV-DO Rev. 0 of every 2004. Here once more, 1xRTT is alluded to as "2.5G" on the grounds that it filled in as a transitional advance to EV-DO. EV-DO models were broadened twice – Revision An administrations rose in 2006 and are presently being prevailing side-effects that utilization Revision B to expand information rates by transmitting over various channels. The 3GPP2's cutting edge innovation, UMB, may not get on, the same number of CDMA administrators are presently intending to advance to LTE.

Indeed, LTE and UMB are frequently called 4G (fourth era) advances since they increment downlink speeds a request of extent. This name is somewhat untimely in light of the fact that what comprises "4G" has not yet been institutionalized. The ITU is right now considering applicant advances for incorporation in the 4G IMT-Advanced standard, including LTE, UMB, and WiMAX II. Objectives for 4G incorporate information rates of least 100 Mbps, utilization of OFDMA transmission, and bundle exchanged conveyance of IP-based voice, information, and gushing interactive media.
